For too long, we've thrown money at "roads and bridges to nowhere" rather than making smart investments in public transportation. Public transportation improvements will reduce our dependence on oil, relieve traffic congestion and cut global warming. Investing in high-speed rail, rapid bus systems and modern metro service will also create more permanent jobs and long-term economic benefits. With higher gas prices and a suffering economy, it's time to prioritize public transportation.
Our state’s transportation network needs to be built and operated in the public interest. That means helping Marylanders get around by reducing traffic congestion and increasing alternatives to car travel. We support the Red Line because it will be a key component for a healthy, sustainable future for Baltimore City and the entire region.
Specifically, Alternative 4C will maximize such benefits for the Red Line project. First and foremost, Light Rail makes the most sense for the Red Line. Light Rail is cleaner, swifter, and more reliable than buses. Second, accessibility is crucial for a transit line to be functional: having surface transit in residential areas will make the Red Line highly accessible for people of all ages and abilities. Construction of surface transit also poses the most possibilities for increasing green space. Third, a tunnel through the dense downtown areas will ensure the efficiency of this system.
Without big changes, Maryland’s transportation problems will severely worsen as our state’s population grows. An efficient public transportation system will reduce the number of cars on the road and increase our options for getting around. The Red Line will be a critical step towards improving the quality of life for all Marylanders. When it is built, the Baltimore region will join other innovative cities in showing the environmental and social good that comes from providing transportation options.
