Babies could be at risk in the one room you thought was safe... the nursery!

"Baby furniture in nurseries can off-gas high levels of formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen that can cause really serious health problems if exposure is high enough," Johanna Neumann of Mary PIRG said.

Sally Thorner reports the Consumer group Mary PIRG released a disturbing new report on formaldehyde in baby furniture; the toxin's linked to childhood allergies and asthma. Advocates are calling on Maryland to come up with stricter standards to protect children.

"The state of California, after 16 years of knowing that formaldehyde poses a danger to children, finally established standards. The least that Maryland could do is establish safety standards for formaldehyde, but ultimately, formaldehyde is really just the tip of the iceberg, and we need comprehensive chemical reform to protect our children before they get exposed," Neumann said.

Mary PIRG's recommending Maryland ban the manufacture and use of chemicals that pose potential dangers to humans.
