Hearings to begin for Calvert Cliffs reactor - Updated 5:52 AM

SOLOMONS — The Maryland Public Service Commission has scheduled a series of hearings this month on the proposal by Constellation Energy Group to build a third nuclear reactor at Calvert Cliffs in Calvert County.

The first is set for 7 p.m. today in Solomons.

Groups opposed to the project plan to argue that a new plant would not be safe from a catastrophic accident or an attack by terrorists. Organizations such as the Nuclear Information and Resource Service and Maryland PIRG favor energy conservation and development of solar and wind power as alternatives to nuclear power.

But some groups concerned about climate change said nuclear energy will be needed to replace some of the power now generated by fossil fuels.
