Coalition Wants Investigation Coalition Wants Investigation Of Wholesale Prices (new window)

A diverse group of electricity customers are urging energy regulators to ensure prices offered by certain wholesale markets meet a federally mandated fairness standard.

The coalition of 41 consumer advocacy, business and municipal organizations is asking the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to investigate what it calls "unjust and unreasonable" prices offered by regional transmission organizations. The coalition includes the Maryland Office of the People's Counsel and the Maryland Public Interest Research Group.

Regional transmission organizations administer centralized wholesale electric power markets in the mid-Atlantic and four other regions.

Mid-Atlantic grid operator PJM Interconnection says rising electricity prices simply reflect fuel costs, demand and regulatory uncertainty. The customer groups contend other factors, including the exercise of market power, also contribute.
