Drugs in Your Drinking Water? (new window)

Before you take another sip of water, you'll want to listen up. That water you're drinking could contain prescription drugs. An investigation by the Associated Press has uncovered disturbing details of what could be in your water that could harm you. Trace amounts of prescription drugs, everything from antibiotics, mood stabilizers, and sex hormones.

So how does that happen? Johanna Neumann, with MD PIRG says, "People take drugs and it's absorbed by the body… but the rest ends up in the toilet and ends up in our water system. The water gets processed and then goes to a reservoir, but a lot of treatments don't address drugs in the water system."

24 cities, including Philadelphia and Northern New Jersey, were found with very small amounts of drugs in their drinking water. Everything from caffeine, codeine, and over-the-counter medications. Testing was not done in Baltimore. But a spokesman for the department of public works says the city has among the highest quality of drinking water in the country.

And if you think the water cooler or bottled water is any safer… think again. Experts say even filtered water isn't as clean are you might think. Neumann says,  "A lot of the time bottled water is just tap water with a pretty label slapped on it."

Water suppliers insist the level of drugs detected in the drinking supplies is not harmful. Still, some are calling for more research to get to the bottom of the water woes. Of the 62 major water providers contacted, only 28 cities tested their drinking water.
